Timber Built Kennels and Runs - The perfect Solutions For Your Dogs!
Saltire Stables - Fife Scotland

Dog Kennels are an excellent example of our speciality product. So many of our clients have individual requirements and ideas that can be incorporated into a building that giving an exact price is difficult - and that is without conring the variation that happens due solely to the difference each breed brings in terms of size.

All our products are designed and manufactured to an excellent standard and the kennels have integral runs. Using all the quality components including pressure treated cladding as in our normal buildings our "standard" format is to provide a kennel building 1.65 deep x 1.2m wide (5'6 x 4') with a pent roof in Onduline sloping to the rear, with a translucent sheet for light. This provides a 2.1m (7') entry height.

Access is provided through a front 2 part door with a split to allow the bottom 600mm (2') to be left permanently open for the dogs. Internally we provide a full width sleeping shelf at 450mm (18") above the ground and the kennel is lined with OSB Sterling Board to 1.2m (4'). Recognising how destructive dogs can be, all exposed door edges in the kennel and the sleeping shelf edge have metal anti-chew strips applied.

Depending our your requirements, a timber floor deck can be provided where the building is not to be erected on concrete and if necessary, insulation can provided to the walls and floor if the kennel is in a very exposed situation.

The runs are 1.95m (6'6) long but can be extended and can be either in parallel giving each dog a separate compound, or left without partitions to give a bigger run area. The timber studs are covered with weatherboarding up to 1.2m (4') and the upper 0.9m (3') has a heavy duty 50 x 50mm (2 x 2") galvanised weldmesh grid for viewing and security. In larger runs, say for hounds, we can also provide a rear access hatch for ease of feeding and water bowl top-up.

As an option, the roof of the kennel could be altered to an Apex style extending 1.2m (4') over the compound to give weather protection to the doors and of course the s of the runs can have the weatherboarding extended to suit (say full height) to give additional wind resistance. You could also line the run area with Sterling Board and lining the kennels with galvanised steel sheet to prevent chewing and for ease of cleaning.

In terms of the basework most customers prepare a concrete plinth and a single layer of brickwork on mortar to lift the framework. The bricks have a 1" gap between them to facilitate power washing of the kennel. A simpler solution is to place the timber frame of the kennel on heavy bearers and a separate floor for the kennel. Once erected, you then lay slabs to the floor using the depth of the bearers (usually 63mm (2.5")) and around the edge put a layer of stone chips to give an attractive appearance and to allow urine to drain away. The slabs make removal of faeces very straightforward.
