Timber garages
are probably Saltire Stables' most popular non
equestrian buildings. We offer a very wide range of sizes, from
around 3.0 x 3.6m (10' x 12') right up to 5.4 x 9.0m (18' x 30')
We can make buildings higher, lower, wider or longer that these
sizes and of course you can add these to other equestrian or bespoke
buildings as required to create a combination unit.

Double garage with GRP Up &
Over doors and separate integral workshop
With
a garage, you must first determine the use you are going to put
it to! This isn't as silly as it sounds. A large number are not
used for cars but for anything else - bicycles, freezers, DIY
junk, boats, woodstores etc! If you do want to garage cars, then
go for something 4.8m (16') long which will cover nearly every
car. However if you are likely to have other things inside like
a freezer or bicycles on the end go for 5.4 or 6.0m (18 - 20').
As
for span, a single car can fit a garage as little as 2.4m (8')
but is a squeeze to get out so our range begins at 3.0m (10')
wide which is much more comfortable. A double garage can be as
little as 4.8m (16') wide but again a touch extra makes a big
difference - 5.4m (18') is ideal.
In
terms of front doors, we allow for timber access doors with leafs
of variable widths to suit the openings which depend on the final
size. You can also specify standard up & over doors in 2.1m
(7') widths and heights of up to 2.1m (7') in a standard metal primer coat for overpainting or an attractive white
GRP Georgian style. These doors are also available wider &
taller together with automatic motorised opening mechanisms. We
hold separate brochures on these options but
once you stray away from these standard sizes there is a substantial
premium for this.
One
way to avoid this is to stick to paired timber doors for which
we need charge no premium. This might be of interest to those
with 4 x 4 vehicles - these vehicles will just fit through an
up & over door but only without a roofrack - so you should
consider added height.

Concrete
Details
This building would be bolted to a concrete plinth, normally at
least 150mm (6") thick where taking a motor car. The concrete
should have some reinforcing by the entrance doorway as this is
the area of greatest "shear" and therefore
wear. It can either be bolted through a single course of brickwork
laid as per the plan on a larger concrete base or else directly
to a concrete plinth without the brickline but laid to the brickline
dimensions and a minimum of 50mm (2") above the general ground
level to enable the weatherboard to project over the concrete
for weather protection. In either case, care should be taken at
the garage doors to prevent rainwater blowing or running into
the garage under the door.
